The SST transmission in the EVO X and the RalliArt is often misunderstood, misdioagnosed and mostly mistreated!

In many cases we have found a oil change with the corerct oil, new filter and some additional TLC (as we know whats best) will fix a lot of faults and immediately improve the performance of the transmission.

Most importantly the oil change intervals should be REGULAR, and more OFTEN that Mitsubishi recommend in the service manual. We have seen horrible oil contamination due to the oil not being changed early enough, mainly due to owners relying on the vehicle owners manual as a guide.
Its WIDELY recongnosed that Mitsubishi have drastically underestimated the long term wear and tear and resulting oil change requirements of this transmission.

WHEN TO CHANGE OIL

Mitsubishi recommend a long interval before the sst trans oil is suggested to be changed, here is our advice:

Track use and or Spirited driving

  • Change filter every 4 track days or 6 months or 10,0000 km which ever comes first
  • Change oil every 8 track days or 12 months or 20,0000 km which ever comes first

Normal road use

  • Change filter 12 months or 10,0000 km which ever comes first
  • Change oil every 24 months or 20,0000 km which ever comes first

PROGRAMMING THE SST TRANS ECU

There is a lot of discussion about what is right and wrong here, but the number one thing IS IF YOU HAVE AN UPGRADED ECU tune and or modified car, its IMPERATIVE you get the tune completed to match the performance of your trans code.
Incorrect programming will result in clutch slip and extra wear on yoiur transmission.

HOW TO USE THE TRANS SHIFT PROGRAMMING CORRECTLY

Depending on if you havea  EVO or a RalliArt, both have a sports mode, the EVO has Super sports mode.

if you are dricing the car in a “spirited” way its IMPERATIVE you use at least Sports mode. This reduces clutch slip, resulting in less clutch wear and less heat.

FAULT CODES

In the intereim here are some fault codes should you know the code for diagnosis.

IMPORTANT NOTES

  • Do not assume becuase your car shows a code that this is the fault
  • Do not dismantle your transmission unless you have thoroughly investigated the fault
  • Be sure the person who is dismantling your transmission has done it before
  • Ask do they have the special tools to dismantle and rebuild the transmission
  • Most of all, be sure you have access to the CORRECT spare parts!
